Louis was a leading authority on trusts and private client matters, as well as corporate structuring.
After practicing as a criminal lawyer and engaging in litigation in Gibraltar, he formed the firm which bears his name. Louis took an active part in politics, becoming a member of the Legislative Council from 1964 to 1969. He also acted as Minister for Port and Trade in the Gibraltar Government from 1965 to 1969.
He was largely responsible for legislation implemented in Gibraltar in 1967 to create the exempt company, which lasted for several decades before being phased out recently as a result of sustained pressure from the European Union and the OECD.
After attending school at Christian Brothers, Line Wall College, and subsequently at Funchal, Madeira, during World War II, Louis read law at University College London. He was called to the Bar in England in 1950 by the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple and subsequently called to the Bar in Gibraltar.
He took silk in 1982 and, prior to the merger which formed TSN, was senior partner of Louis W. Triay and Partners.
Louis was in practise more than 70 years and was recognised by the Guinness World Records, on 1 December 2020, as the Longest Career as a Lawyer in the world.
