Philip is a leading financial services and technology lawyer, where he increasingly leads on a variety of matters concerning financial services and regulatory matters. This includes having advised a number of distributed ledger technology (cryptocurrency / digital asset) providers, token generating events, investment funds, banks, insurance firms and technology businesses. This also includes advising international businesses on Gibraltar law components of taxation, high-profile mergers and acquisitions and also the public listing of businesses.
Philip is also known most commonly for advising SMEs on a number of issues, almost as a trusted external general counsel, including commercial contracts, structuring, regulatory compliance (AML/CFT) and licensing, taxation, employment, property and dispute resolution matters. He also regularly advises sports teams and events venues on a range of matters.
Philip is a dynamic proactive lawyer with 6+ years of hand-on experience advising, building and starting successful businesses with a particular expertise in commercial law, technology, financial services, regulation and licensing.
Unlike other lawyers of his standing, Philip has hands on experience and brings a dynamic, entrepreneurial insight and very proactive approach to his work in all matters. Philip is a co-founder and adviser of a Gibraltar digital asset broker and custodian business where he led the business’ regulatory authorisation as a distributed ledger technology provider. Philip was responsible for the business’ various compliance policies and controls as the company’s compliance and regulatory director. Philip continues to advise the business as it continues to grow from its 3 co-founders to a business now processing over €250m in annual trade turnover and 20 members of staff across multiple jurisdictions.
Philip is a proactive member of the legal profession and business community in Gibraltar, regularly participating in industry bodies. He is an executive member of the Gibraltar Association of New Technologies, driving policy on the distributed ledger technology sector in Gibraltar, and has also served as director and executive member of the Gibraltar Federation of Small Businesses (2017-20), the Gibraltar Bar Council and also co-founded the Gibraltar Startup Community. He regularly writes in his free time, having published two books and regularly producing content. His most recent book is an introduction to Third Party Litigation Funding.
Philip was called to the Supreme Court of Gibraltar in 2015 after having been called to the Bar of England and Wales by the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple in 2014 having achieved a very competent in his bar professional training course. He read Law and Sociology (LLB) at Cardiff University, holds a Masters in Law (LLM) in Third Party Litigation Funding from City University London and also holds a Professional Certificate of Competency in Gibraltar Law from the University of Gibraltar.
